Self-employed won’t see a reduced deduction for half of SECA tax this year after all. Although self-employed filers get the benefit of the two percentage point cut in the Social Security tax rate for 2011, they’re able to base their income tax deduction
for one-half of SECA tax paid on the higher rate. We erred in our Jan. 7 Tax Letter
when we said the write-off would be lower because of the payroll tax cut. For 2011,
the SECA tax rate is 13.3% on the first $106,800 of earnings and 2.9% above that.
